Published by the Fondation Maeght, L’Œuvre Ultime: De Cézanne à Dubuffet examines the final creative periods of some of the most influential artists of the modern era. Through paintings, drawings and works on paper, the catalogue considers how artists continued to transform their practice in later life, often moving beyond established styles towards increasingly personal and experimental forms of expression.
Bringing together works by Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Georges Braque, Piet Mondrian, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Jean Dubuffet, the publication explores the idea of the late work as a distinct phase within an artist’s career. Rather than treating these works as conclusions, the exhibition presents them as moments of renewed freedom, where decades of experience are distilled into increasingly direct and individual visual languages.
Produced by the Fondation Maeght, the catalogue combines scholarly texts with 116 colour reproductions across 272 pages. It documents an exhibition that examined artistic maturity, experimentation and creative independence through the work of successive generations of modern artists, while reflecting the Foundation’s longstanding commitment to twentieth-century art.
