Pair of “Jill” floor lamps by Perry A. King, Santiago Miranda and Gianluigi Arnaldi for Arteluce, Italy, circa 1980s. A slender grey metal stem draws each lamp into a spare vertical line, softened by frosted glass elements above and below.
Perry A. King and Santiago Miranda founded King Miranda Associati in Milan in 1976, developing a practice that moved across industrial design, graphics, interiors, interfaces and lighting. Their work is marked by a clear reading of function: technical requirements are organised into forms that remain calm, legible and precise. Created with Gianluigi Arnaldi for Arteluce, Jill belongs to their investigation of the halogen uplighter, where heat, reflection and diffusion made material choice central to the design. The use of glass gave the lamp both a technical and visual role, allowing upward light to be softened by a more atmospheric diffusion. In this pair, that discipline is expressed with restraint: a slim vertical stem, frosted glass and upward light forming a lamp in which structure and atmosphere are held in balance.
