A defining voice of the Transcarpathian School, Viacheslav Prikhodko (1940–2011) was above all a painter of Uzhhorod — its compressed rooflines, shifting light, and distinctive urban character. Neither fully abstract nor conventionally realist, he developed a visual language in which architecture became a vehicle for exploring colour, structure, and spatial balance. His paintings transform familiar streets and buildings into carefully orchestrated arrangements of geometric form and tone.
In Contrast, painted in 1991, dark rooftops and white walls press against one another across the canvas, held together by passages of ochre, blue, and shadow. The title is exact: not conflict, but opposition in equilibrium. Angular forms lock into a tightly organised composition, while subtle tonal shifts create depth and movement across the surface. The city remains recognisable, yet is distilled into a sequence of interlocking planes and colour relationships.
Signed in Cyrillic lower right; titled, inscribed, and dated on the verso with export stamp.
