Pair of Art Deco architectural table lamps by Marcel Breuer, France, circa 1970s. Made from nickel-plated bronze, each lamp combines a semi-cylindrical shade with parallel tubular supports, turning reflection and line into a compact architectural composition.
Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) was a Hungarian-born designer and architect whose work moved from the Bauhaus workshops to the broader language of modern architecture. Breuer entered the Bauhaus in Weimar as a student, later returned to the school in Dessau, and made tubular metal one of the defining materials of interwar design. In his furniture, he used bent steel not as a hidden support, but as a visible structure: light, open, industrial, and architectural in its logic. After working in Europe and Great Britain, Breuer joined Walter Gropius at Harvard in 1937, and later expanded his practice into the design of private houses, public buildings, and monumental post-war architecture. In these French lamps from the 1970s, the same principles are expressed through lighting: line becomes structure, metal carries rhythm, and light is held within an architectural frame.
