Vahe Hekimian (1913–1997) was an Armenian-born artist who spent most of his career in France, developing a restrained abstract language centred on gesture, tonal variation, and the expressive possibilities of paper. He exhibited regularly in France throughout the second half of the twentieth century, and his work forms part of a broader dialogue between post-war French abstraction and Armenian modernism.
In this untitled composition, washes of sepia and grey are interrupted by darker passages of ink and fine linear marks. Drips and areas of absorption remain visible, allowing the process of making to become part of the image itself. The composition balances spontaneity and control, creating a quiet, atmospheric presence through minimal means.
Signed lower right and mounted under passe-partout, the work exemplifies Hekimian's sensitive handling of watercolour and ink and his ability to construct depth and tension through a reduced palette.
