Working between painting and sculpture, Jean Campa (1933–2024) developed a practice centred on rhythm, material, and abstract form. Originally trained as an industrial designer, he became associated with post-war French abstraction and maintained close friendships with artists including Gérard Schneider and André Verdet. Deeply influenced by jazz, Campa sought to translate improvisation into visual language, creating works in which movement emerges through texture, gesture, and the relationship between forms. Today, his work occupies a distinctive position within post-war French abstraction, particularly for its exploration of material and relief as a meeting point between painting and sculpture.
This intimate composition from 2002 reveals the tactile dimension of Campa's practice in two dimensions. Built from layered washes and dense passages of pigment, the surface unfolds through soft transitions between black, grey, and warm brown tones. Circular impressions and gestural marks appear and recede within the composition, creating a subtle rhythm that recalls the artist's reliefs while remaining firmly rooted in the language of paper and pigment.
Modest in scale yet materially rich, the work encapsulates many of the concerns that shaped Campa's wider oeuvre: texture, movement, and the transformation of abstract gesture into physical presence.
