Associated with the Dutch New Figuration movement, Peter Blokhuis (b. 1938) developed a practice that moved between observation and abstraction. His paintings and works on paper often begin with recognisable places or events, which are then reduced to essential relationships of colour, structure, and atmosphere. Works by Blokhuis are held in several Dutch institutional collections, including Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Museum Gouda.
In Explosion à Barcelone, painted in 1974, the city is viewed from above, unfolding across the sheet in a network of rooftops, façades, and distant landmarks. At the centre of the composition, a dark vertical eruption interrupts the urban panorama, breaking the calm rhythm of the surrounding architecture. Soft washes of pale green, ochre, grey, and pink dissolve details into atmosphere, while sharp black marks radiating from the central form introduce a sense of force and instability. The image remains suspended between landscape, memory, and event, allowing the tension of the scene to emerge through the structure of the composition rather than through description alone.
Signed and dated 1974. Titled Explosion à Barcelone.
