Published to accompany the 2002 exhibition of photographs from the FNAC Collection, La Photographie entre Histoire et Poésie presents a broad survey of twentieth-century photography through one of France’s most significant institutional collections. Bringing together works by internationally recognised photographers alongside lesser-known figures, the publication explores photography as both historical document and poetic interpretation.
Rather than tracing a single movement or author, the catalogue reflects the diversity of photographic practice across the twentieth century. Documentary observation, portraiture, conceptual experimentation and personal narrative appear side by side, revealing the breadth of approaches represented within the FNAC Collection and the role such collections have played in preserving and exhibiting photographic culture.
The volume is structured around the images themselves, with generous reproductions and a restrained editorial design that allows individual works to maintain their visual presence. As both an exhibition catalogue and a survey of a major public collection, the publication offers a concise overview of photography's evolution across the last century.
