Murano glass pendant chandelier by Carlo Nason for A.V. Mazzega, Italy, late 1960s. Stacked pulegoso glass shades gather around a chromed metal centre, giving the light a soft, layered volume.
Born and raised on Murano, Carlo Nason worked inside the island’s glass culture at the moment when A.V. Mazzega, founded in 1946, was making specialist lighting a central part of post-war Murano production. During the 1960s and 1970s, he became one of Mazzega’s most recognised lighting designers, using repeated transparent and translucent elements to shape the quality of electric light. His work for the company often treats the shade as the lamp’s architecture: blown glass is assembled in layers, so volume, diffusion and silhouette arise from the same material. In this chandelier, the stacked pulegoso elements continue that logic; the chromed centre holds the tiers in a clear vertical order, while the bubbled glass gives the light depth and a distinctly Murano softness.
