Jacques Germain (1915–2001) was a significant figure in the post-war École de Paris and an important voice within Abstraction Lyrique. One of the few French artists to have studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, he developed a visual language that united structural discipline with lyrical freedom. Throughout his career, drawing remained fundamental to his practice, allowing him to explore rhythm, movement, and the underlying architecture of abstraction with remarkable economy. His work is held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris
In this 1952 sheet, a compact field of black ink is suspended at the centre of the paper. Short horizontal bars gather across the upper register, while darker pools and fine vertical trails descend through the image, gradually loosening its lower edge.
Opaque deposits, dry strokes and diluted washes create distinct degrees of density, allowing the untouched paper to remain an active part of the composition.
Signed lower right, the work condenses Germain’s balance of structure and gesture into a small, tightly held format.
