Pair of wall sconces designed by Ernesto Gismondi for Artemide, Italy, circa 1980. Each sconce features a curved panel of satin-finished amber glass mounted on a lacquered metal base. The softly etched surface gently diffuses light, producing a warm, atmospheric glow. With its clean geometry and restrained palette, the design reflects the quiet clarity of late 20th-century Italian lighting.
These wall lights are imbued with the design philosophy of Ernesto Gismondi (1931–2020), a visionary Italian designer-engineer who founded Artemide in 1959 and became a key figure in postwar Italian lighting and industrial design. Gismondi’s background in aeronautical engineering informed his approach to lighting: he merged advanced technology with pure forms, striving for pieces that are both technically innovative and aesthetically refined. Under his guidance, Artemide grew into a global leader in lighting, celebrated for its “architecturally-driven” designs that unite form and function.
