Jacques Germain (1915–2001) was a central figure of the post-war École de Paris and an important voice within Abstraction Lyrique. One of the few French artists to have studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, he developed a visual language that united structural discipline with lyrical freedom. Throughout his career, drawing remained fundamental to his practice, allowing him to explore rhythm, movement, and the underlying architecture of abstraction with remarkable economy.
Bold black lines traverse the sheet in an open network of intersecting diagonals, creating a composition that feels both spontaneous and carefully organised. Variations in the density of ink and the intervals between the marks establish a shifting visual rhythm, while the untouched paper becomes an active element of the work. Rather than constructing a fixed image, Germain uses line as structure, allowing gesture, balance, and spatial tension to emerge through a restrained vocabulary of means.
Signed lower right and dated 1971, the drawing reflects the artist's mature exploration of abstraction, where a minimal language of ink and paper is sufficient to generate a complex sense of movement and order.
