A long-overdue homage to Pierre Jahan (1909–2003), Libre cours is the first major retrospective publication of this French photographer’s work, produced in conjunction with his 2010 summer exhibition at the Musée Réattu in Arles. Jahan, often working at the margins of photographic currents, blended surrealism with commercial art, reportage with poetic observation. This hardcover volume presents an extremely varied output: from dreamlike photomontages and advertising collages to vivid chronicles of 1940s Parisian life. Insightful essays (in French) accompany the images, situating Jahan among mid-century greats like Brassaï and Man Ray while highlighting his unique voice.
