Jacques Germain (1915–2001) was a central figure of the post-war École de Paris and an important voice within Abstraction Lyrique. One of the few French artists to have studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, he developed a visual language that united structural discipline with lyrical freedom. Throughout his career, drawing remained fundamental to his practice, allowing him to explore rhythm, movement, and the underlying architecture of abstraction with remarkable economy.
Dense black ink strokes gather into a compact central field, where overlapping gestures create a dynamic interplay of rhythm and structure. The surrounding paper balances the concentrated energy of the composition, while subtle variations in pressure and direction animate the surface. Gesture and order remain in careful equilibrium throughout the drawing.
Executed in 1977, the drawing reflects Germain's mature exploration of abstraction, where ink became a precise yet expressive means of investigating movement, balance, and spatial tension through the economy of line.
