Active in the figurative tradition of post-war French painting, Roger Clamagirand (1920–1979) exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1959. His work was subsequently included in the 1965 École de Paris exhibition in Biarritz and San Sebastián, and in an exhibition of contemporary French figurative painting in Tokyo in 1971. This exhibition history places him within a wider artistic community whose work continued to explore recognisable subjects through individual approaches to colour and form.
Paysage du Gard brings cultivated land close to the simplicity of a pattern. Dark rows of vegetation curve across broad ochre slopes, their repeated forms softened by the loose handling of the paint. The palette is concentrated and warm, with subtle changes of tone running through the fields and hills. Smoothly brushed areas sit alongside compact, irregular touches, preserving the distinction between the broad sweep of the countryside and the small marks of cultivation.
