Jacques Germain — Untitled Ink Drawing, 1952

€1.800,00

Among the important representatives of Abstraction Lyrique, Jacques Germain (1915–2001) brought structural clarity to the gestural language of post-war French abstraction. One of the few French artists to study at the Bauhaus in Dessau, he retained its discipline of composition while allowing rhythm, pressure and the physical mark to shape the work. Works by Germain are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.

In this 1952 sheet, a compact field of black ink is suspended at the centre of the paper. Short horizontal bars gather across the upper register, while darker pools and fine vertical trails descend through the image, gradually loosening its lower edge.

Opaque deposits, dry strokes and diluted washes create distinct degrees of density, allowing the untouched paper to remain an active part of the composition.

Signed lower right, the work condenses Germain’s balance of structure and gesture into a small, tightly held format.

Cultural Habits is a space for those who see objects not as possessions, but as silent carriers of meaning. Our curator's view is drawn to objects where aesthetic form meets cultural significance. When we see the balance of form and essence, we meet true beauty. An artifact is more than just an object. It is memory and thought embodied in an object. It is the ability of objects to tell stories — without words, through surface, weight, silence.
