Chrome is not a style. Why reflective metal keeps returning — and what it says about the future?

Chrome is back — or, more precisely, reflective metal is. In contemporary interiors, the word is often used as shorthand for a wider family of silver-toned reflective surfaces: chrome-plated steel, polished nickel, stainless steel and aluminium. The visual resemblance is obvious; historically, however, these materials and finishes belong to different technologies and design traditions.
Reflective metal has two seemingly opposed qualities. It is hard, cool and precise, yet its appearance is unstable: it takes on the light, colours and movement around it, making a solid object seem lighter, faster or less fixed.
That tension helps explain why it has repeatedly been used to give modernity a visible form. The same shine can clarify construction, stage luxury, suggest speed or dissolve into a digital image.
The question is not which style owns chrome, but what each period has asked its shine to make visible.

One Surface, Different Modernities

By the mid-1920s, the Bauhaus was looking beyond workshop experimentation towards industrial production. Tubular steel offered lightness, repeatability and a route from prototype to manufacture. In Marcel Breuer’s B3 chair of 1925, later known as the Wassily chair, the bulk of an upholstered armchair is replaced by bent steel tubing and suspended bands of fabric. The frame does not decorate the chair; it organises it.

The chair is often discussed in terms of material honesty, but the phrase only goes so far: its gleam comes from a plated finish. What it makes visible is not untreated steel, but the logic of its assembly.

At the same moment, Art Deco put reflective metal to a very different use. Polished surfaces worked with mirror, glass and lacquer to catch and multiply electric light. In a 1930s Pirouett lamp attributed to Jean Chavanis , an articulated chrome frame supports a glass-panelled shade; adjustment becomes part of the visual performance. Here function and display are not opposites.
Where the Bauhaus used industrial technique to rethink the object, Art Deco used reflective surfaces to make modern life desirable.

In the 1930s, Streamline Moderne redirected that desire towards speed. Aerodynamic curves migrated from cars, trains and aircraft into furniture, clocks and appliances, even when they served no practical function. During the Depression, industrial designers used styling to recast familiar mass-produced goods as efficient, modern and future-facing. Chrome became both the glamour of movement and a tool for selling progress.
By 1934, MoMA’s Machine Art could present springs, bearings and kitchen equipment as objects of aesthetic attention. Industrial precision could now be presented as an aesthetic value in itself.

When the System Became the Image

High-tech architecture shifted attention from the finished object to the systems that made it work. At the Centre Pompidou, opened in 1977, structure was exposed, while circulation and services were pushed to the exterior and organised as part of the building’s public face. What architecture had normally concealed became part of the experience of the building.

In 1986, Shiro Kuramata used an industrial material to very different effect. How High the Moon is made from nickel- plated steel mesh. From a distance, it reads as a club chair; up close, its volume breaks into metal and air. Reflectivity no longer simply clarifies structure. It makes mass appear uncertain.

When the Future Became a Surface

By the late 1980s, visions of the technological future were becoming softer and more fluid. In Marc Newson’s Lockheed Lounge (1988), individually shaped aluminium panels are riveted over a flowing fibreglass body. The seams recall aircraft fabrication, yet the silhouette remains continuous. Metal behaves less like a framework than a skin.

By the late 1990s, digital technology was becoming personal, domestic and desirable. The iMac G3 — translucent rather than metallic — matters here because digital change still announced itself through a visibly new object on the desk. Around the same time, chrome-effect type, silver gradients, glossy interface buttons and liquid three-dimensional forms were carrying the idea of metal onto the screen.
Breuer’s steel frame made construction legible. Y2K silver suggested what digital life might feel like. Y2K changed not only the meaning of reflective metal, but the medium in which that meaning could exist. Chrome no longer required chromium, or even a physical object. It could be rendered.

As computing became ordinary infrastructure, this silvered futurism lost its central place. Reflective metal remained in use, but it no longer carried the dominant image of what came next.

Why Reflective Metal Returns

Y2K nostalgia and cyclical taste help explain why reflective metal is visible again. They do not fully explain why it still looks technological.

The deeper change lies in technology itself. In 1998, digital change could still be identified with a conspicuously new object. Today, software, data, cloud services, networks and AI reshape everyday life through familiar phones and computers. Their physical infrastructure is vast, but their workings are rarely legible in any single object. Reflective metal does not depict these systems. Instead, it gives technological abstraction a physical character: cool, precise, manufactured and responsive to light. Its earlier histories remain present — Bauhaus construction, Art Deco display, Streamline speed, high-tech infrastructure and Y2K rendering — but none is revived whole.

In 1925, modernity could be seen in Breuer’s steel tube. In 1977, in the exposed systems of the Centre Pompidou. In 1998, in the new computer on the desk. Today, some of the most consequential technologies have no single recognisable body.

Reflective metal keeps returning because it is both material and image: precise enough to signify technology, mutable enough to carry a different future each time. As technology becomes harder to locate in any one object, that familiar shine gives it a visible surface again.
