Butterfly floor lamp by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Flos, Italy, 1980s. Two pleated fabric shades unfold from a central glass diffuser like a pair of fans, allowing the lamp to shift from a narrow upright form to a broad winged silhouette. In this white-and-amber version, every adjustment changes both the colour of the light and the balance of the object.
Afra and Tobia Scarpa worked across architecture, interiors, furniture and lighting, bringing the same attention to structure, movement and material to each discipline. Their long collaboration with Flos produced lamps in which the source, support and direction of light become part of the composition. Butterfly turns that thinking into movement: its two shades can be opened, closed or positioned independently at different angles, continuously redrawing the silhouette and the atmosphere around it. The lamp can feel intimate and softly enclosed or broad, luminous and theatrical — a sculptural presence that changes with the room.
