A Designer Apart (Éditions du Regard, Paris, 1989) is more than a monograph; it’s an immersive journey into the creative mind of this visionary French designer. Spanning Putman’s life and career as one of the foremost designers of the late 20th century, this volume offers intimate glimpses of her most iconic projects. Through 330 photographs and drawings (216 in color), readers explore the sleek black-and-white interiors of New York’s Morgans Hotel and the modernist halls of Bordeaux’s CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain, among other landmark designs. Insightful commentary by writer François-Olivier Rousseau accompanies the imagery, illuminating Putman’s philosophy of blending modern lines with classic elegance and highlighting her influence on contemporary design. The tone throughout is sophisticated yet accessible, reflecting Putman’s belief that good design elevates everyday life.

As a physical object, A Designer Apart is itself a collectible piece. This large quarto volume (approx. 32 × 23.5 cm), printed in French by Éditions du Regard (and bound in Spain), features a high-gloss, black-and-white checkered dust jacket – echoing Putman’s signature motif – over a black cloth hardcover. Inside are 279 pages on fine glossy paper, profusely illustrated with Putman’s sketches, photographs, and design plans. Now long out of print, A Designer Apart remains a sought-after treasure that encapsulates Putman’s timeless aesthetic for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Cultural habits

Cultural Habits is a space for those who see objects not as possessions, but as silent carriers of meaning. Our curator's view is drawn to objects where aesthetic form meets cultural significance. When we see the balance of form and essence, we meet true beauty. An artifact is more than just an object. It is memory and thought embodied in an object. It is the ability of objects to tell stories — without words, through surface, weight, silence.
