Pair of sculptural crystal candle holders by Daum, France, circa 1970. Each piece forms a broad U of clear crystal on a faceted pedestal, giving the pair both optical depth and sculptural weight.
Daum was founded in Nancy in 1878, and its history passes through the École de Nancy, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and post-war sculptural crystal. In the 1940s, the house replaced glass with crystal and introduced a new direction of free forms; by the 1960s, it was renewing its technical language through pâte de verre, lost-wax casting and collaborations with Roger Tallon, Salvador Dalí and César. These candle holders belong to that later, more sculptural direction: the decorative effect comes from the optical density of crystal itself, where curve, thickness and texture gather candlelight. In this pair, Daum’s crystal becomes a setting for light itself, holding the flame within clear curve, weight and reflection.
