Abat-jour table lamp by Cini Boeri for Arteluce, Italy, 1978. A pyramidal black marble base supports an expansive painted-metal shade, giving the familiar abat-jour form a quiet architectural scale.
Cini Boeri was a Milanese architect and designer whose work moved between residential architecture, interiors and industrial design. After graduating from the Politecnico di Milano in 1951 and working with Marco Zanuso, she opened her own studio in 1963, developing a practice centred on function, proportion and the relationship between people and their environment. For Arteluce, the Milanese lighting company founded by Gino Sarfatti in 1939, Boeri brought that architectural discipline into the scale of a domestic lamp. Abat-jour belongs to a late 1970s lighting culture in which the shade and casing became more formally present. Here, the marble base gives the object weight and balance, while painted metal and opaline Perspex spread the light through a broad, calm plane. The lamp reflects Boeri’s ability to make a familiar object feel spatial, measured and quietly exact.
