Trained at the Basel School of Applied Arts under Walter Bodmer, he became closely involved in Freiburg’s artistic life, helping to establish the Mehlwaage artists’ workshop. From the mid-1970s, drawing took an increasingly central place in his practice, as the colour and substance of his earlier paintings gave way to the possibilities of pencil and paper.

In this untitled composition, fine, wavering lines form an open network, interrupted by darker knots and small angular passages of shading. The graphite ranges from barely visible traces to emphatic black accents, retaining the hesitations and changes of pressure within each stroke. Despite its intricate structure, much of the sheet remains untouched.

Dated 1998, the drawing belongs to the final years of Mutter’s practice. It is signed and dated in pencil at the lower centre.

Details:

Artist: Heinrich Mutter (1924–1999)
Title: Untitled
Date: 1998
Medium: Pencil on paper
Dimensions: H 39 × W 29.5 cm
Dimensions (framed): H 53 × W 43 cm
Origin: Germany
Signature: Signed and dated in pencil at the lower centre.
Condition: Light wear consistent with age.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0900/0540/6023/files/ART-090_02_HeinrichMutter_UntitledAbstractPencilDrawing_1998.jpg?v=1793639763
